While attending a preparatory school on the Moon, Kira had a friend named Athrun. After graduating, they would head their separate ways and hoped that they would meet each other again some day. Athrun gave Kira a parting gift at their last meeting: a robotic bird named Torii (Birdy).

Kira and his parents then moves to a neutral territory in a resource satellite, Heliopolis, (where Kira would attend a technical college) in hopes of avoiding the war. However, Heliopolis gets attacked by ZAFT forces who are attempting to steal five Gundams that the EA is building there. Trying to escape the conflict between the two forces, he stumbles upon the Gundams and ends up being in the middle of the battlefield. Events did not go in his favor and Kira ends up piloting the only suit that the ZAFT forces was unable to steal -- the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam -- in order to protect his friends and loved ones from being killed amidst the battle.

As events unfolded, Kira is forced to remain piloting the Strike and work alongside a team of EAF aboard their warship, the Archangel, to continue to protect his friends (who are also on board the warship) from a team of ZAFT that persistently pursues them.


Kira is a first-generation Coordinator, which means that his parents are Naturals. He has remarkable mental and physical abilities, and is talented in computer programming. His talent has helped many others, such as re-writting the OS of other mobile suits in order for Naturals to be able to pilot them more efficiently. Kira has great fighting skills, and they continue to improve with every battle. He is also good in hand-to-hand combat; however, he's not efficient in using handguns and prefers not to use them as he threw a handgun at an opponent in Phase 19.

Kira is shy, but kind-hearted. He hates the idea of war and does not want anything to do with it. He is also quite sensitive as he cries / mourns for the ones that died either by his hands or by those of his enemies. He goes through a lot confusion and suffering as Naturals as well as Coordinators continue to remark on his decision to fight alongside a group of Naturals. He grows stronger, however, as Lacus Clyne gives him some words of wisdom concerning fighting and wars.

While attending a preparatory school on the Moon, Athrun had a friend named Kira. After graduating, they would head their separate ways and hoped that they would meet each other again some day. Athrun gave Kira a parting gift at their last meeting: a robotic bird named Torii (Birdy).

Athrun moves back to the PLANTs and soon finds out about the destruction of one of the PLANTs that his mother resided in -- the incident is now known as the "Bloody Valentine" tragedy. Angry with the death of his mother through the EAF's cowardly tactics, he enrolled into the ZAFT military.

He became a member of the elite Le Creuset team, which was in charge of the operation in Heliopolis to capture the five Gundams being built there. He captured the GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam and subsequently became its pilot. In the midst of battle, he was astonished to find that Kira was piloting a Gundam fighting alongside the Naturals. Not wishing to fight Kira, Athrun tries to persuade Kira in joining his fellow Coordinators, but Kira persistently refuses. Athrun then felt that he had no choice but to battle against Kira and possibly even kill him as the Le Creuset team continues to pursue Kira and the EAF team he's with.


Athrun is the son of a PLANT council member, Patrick Zala. He is a kind and respectable person, but he's often troubled due to having to fight his friend, Kira, and other events. Like Kira, he also doesn't wish to fight, but joined ZAFT in hopes of preventing anymore incidents like the "Bloody Valentine" tragedy.

Athrun "has a talent for mechanical tinkering, and has created numerous robot pets for his friends and acquaintances" (gundamofficial.com). Athrun has great hand-to-hand combat skills as well as piloting skills being the best pilot in the Le Creuset team. He's also an expert with handguns and always connects with his targets. He also possesses great leadership qualities as he leds his own team into battle against the EAF team aboard the Archangel.

Cagalli Yula Athha

Cagalli is first found in the research satellite, Heliopolis, investigating a secret project that the EA was developing. Her suspicions were confirmed after seeing the Gundams herself amidst the battle against the invading ZAFT team.

She manages to escape the destruction of Heliopolis and ends up in the Desert Dawn resistance group in northern Africa. She helps the Archangel win a battle against the Desert Dawn ZAFT group and other subsequent battles against them. After one of the Archangel's battles against Desert Dawn, she met up with the one who got her to the escape pods in Heliopolis, Kira. While on earth, she was able to get better acquainted with Kira and formed a strong bond with him.

After the defeat of Desert Dawn, Archangel planned on crossing the ocean in an attempt to reach the EAF base in Alaska. When Cagalli heard of this, she goes along with them to help them when needed, despite the concerns of the captain of the Archangel.


Cagalli is the daughter of one of the representatives of the Orb Union, Lord Uzumi Athha. She is very much a tomboy and dislikes having to wear dresses. She's "tough and headstrong, and her impulsive nature often leads her to take bold risks" (gundamofficial.com). She does not like to fight, but she believes that it is the only way to end the war.

Cagalli has experience in hand-to-hand combat and in using handguns. She has moderate skills in piloting a Gundam, but she is a great leader, leading defensive units on Orb against enemies that attempted to invade her country.

Lacus Clyne

Lacus was attending a memorial service in outer space on the anniversary of the "Blood Valentine" tragedy when her ship was attacked by EAF. Her lifepod was found by Kira and brought aboard the Archangel. Being the daugther of the PLANT Supreme Council Chairman, Siegel Clyne, she was treated somewhat as a prisoner always being confined to her room. Kira was the only one who really talked to her and they got to know each other better. She was happy to find out that Kira was an old friend of Athrun, but wished they wouldn't fight one another.

As events unfolded, Archangel was forced to use Lacus as a hostage in order to prevent the ZAFT forces from continually attacking them. Kira despised this notion, and therefore, helped her escape to the ZAFT ship that always pursued them. Afterwards, Lacus was placed on a ship that took her back to the PLANTs.


Lacus is the daugther of the PLANT Supreme Council Chairman, Siegel Clyne. She is a pop star who is idolized by all Coordinators and sings songs of peace. She's engaged to Athrun for political reasons, but she does love him. She's usually accompanied by a round, pink, mechanical pet named Haro, which was given to her by Athrun while on a date with him.

Lacus is a kind, sweet, and a gentle person. She treats and cares about everyone whether they are Natural or Coordinator. This quality may often make her seem naive, but she strongly believes in equality and living in a world without fighting. She is strongly opposed to fighting, and she uses her commanding nature to lead and guide others against the war between the EAF and ZAFT.
